09 Jan, 2015
Lakhs of pilgrims and a large number of people from the capital Dhaka and adjacent areas joined Juma prayers Friday on Biswa Ijtema ground on the eastern bank of Turag.
The first phase of Biswa Ijtema, the second largest congregation of the Muslims after Hajj, began on Friday morning at Tongi, on the outskirts of the capital Dhaka.
The congregation started formally with religious sermons after Fajr prayers.
The first phase of the three-day Biswa Ijtema will end on January 11 (Sunday) with the Akheri Munajat while the second phase will be held from January 16 to 18.
Although countrywide blockade sponsored BNP-led 20-party alliance, lakhs of people have already thronged the Ijtema venue.
Bangladesh Army has set up seven bridges with pontoons connecting the two banks of the Turag for the movement of the devotees.
Law enforcement agencies have also enforced a five-tire security vigil in and around the venue.
The Biswa Ijtema is being organised by Tablig Jamaat since 1946, and it is being held in two phases from 2012 to ease accommodation problem.
