Environment activists on Monday urged the government to conduct mobile courts under Noise Pollution (control) Rules 2006 to check sound pollution.
At a human chain, they suggested implementing the rules by empowering the traffic police for imposing fines for violating the law.
Save the Environment Movement and United Peace Movement formed the human chain in front of the Dhaka University fine arts faculty.
Department of environment former additional director general Abdus Sobhan said that due to sound pollution people suffer hearing impairment, headaches, fastidiousness, mental pressure, heart problems and insomnia.
He said that coordination is vital among Department of Environment, Bangladesh Road Transport Authority and Dhaka metropolitan traffic police.
Abdus Sobhan added that noise pollution poses serious health hazard to the urban population and must be curbed through awareness programmes among the masses.
Save the Environment Movement secretary Aslam Khan, coordinator Atiq Murshed, Nagarik Adhikar Sangrakkhan Forum general secretary Ishrat Jahan Baby also spoke at the programme.
They said that the government need to ensure strict monitoring system on every road to implement the rule.
BRTA authorities should also check whether the drivers or vehicles were using hydraulic horns before issuing and renewing licences, they said.
