Bangladesh, one of top disaster risk countries: Report
26 Aug, 2016
Bangladesh is one of the top five countries that are exposed to disaster risks, shows a global report for 2016.
The world risk index calculated the disaster risk for 171 countries by multiplying vulnerability with exposure to natural hazards such as cyclones, droughts, earthquakes, floods, and sea-level rise.
According to the index released on Thursday, only four countries are more vulnerable to risks than Bangladesh and they are Vanuatu, Tonga, the Philippines and Guatemala.
In Bangladesh's neighbourhood, India is placed at 77th position and Pakistan at 72nd.
The index shows that the global hotspots for a high disaster risk lie in Oceania, Southeast Asia, Central America, and the Southern Sahel.
Highly developed countries with a low level of exposure do best in the risk assessment. Saudi Arabia (ranked 169th), Malta (ranked 170th) and Qatar (ranked 171st) have the lowest disaster risk.
The index is prepared as part of the World Risk Report 2016 by the United Nations University Institute for Environment and Human Security (UNU-EHS) and Bundnis Entwicklung Hilft in cooperation with the University of Stuttgart in Germany.
UNU-EHS scientific director Matthias Garschagen called on the international community to invest more in the establishment and development of critical infrastructure even before disasters occur.
Peter Mucke, project manager of the report, said crumbling transport routes, unreliable electricity grids, and dilapidated buildings not only hinder humanitarian aid from overseas, but also delay crucial aid for those affected in the event of a disaster,
