10 Sep, 2015
A Supreme Court chamber judge imposed a status quo on the release and screening of the Rana Plaza movie, which portrays the worst workplace disaster in world history and was slated to hit the screens tomorrow (Friday), till September 14.
Justice Hasan Foez Siddique on Thursday imposed the status quo after hearing a review petition filed challenging the Appellate Division’s September 6 order that lifted a ban on the movie imposed by High Court.
The chamber judge of the apex court also fixed September 14 for hearing the review petition at the full bench of the Appellate Division.
Earlier in the day, Bangladesh National Garments Workers Employees League President Sirajul Islam Rony submitted the review petition, saying the horrible scenes were not deleted from the movie in line with the HC directives.
After filing the review petition, Rony said producer of the film, Shamima Akhter on September 6 submitted her writ petition containing “false” information against the High Court ban.
The 137-minute film produced directed by Nazrul Islam Khan got the Bangladesh Film Censor Board clearance on July 16, after a long delay due to objections over some scenes.
The film had been scheduled for release on September 4. The However, the HC verdict on August 24 imposed a ban on screening the movie for six months.
Later on September 6, a four member bench of Supreme Court led by chief justice SK Sinha stayed the HC ban on screening of Rana Plaza after a hearing on an appeal filed by the movies’ producer Shamima Akhter.
The plot of the movie revolves around Reshma, the girl who was rescued from rubble 17 days after Rana Plaza caved in and claimed at least 1,135 lives on April 24, 2013.
