Sundarbans fishermen near to starvation

The days of the fishermen of Sundarbans areas are now passing through starvation as they could not catch fish in the river over the oil tanker capsize incident in Shela River. Our correspondent says after visiting some of the areas adjacent to the Sundarbans on Monday. Kamal Sardar, 38, a fisherman from Joymoni village under Mongla upazila told risingbd.com, “We stopped catching fish as our valuable nets would be disfigured if we took the net in the river for catching fishes.” One fisherman Mojibur Rahman, 40 of Charerkhal area of the same upazila said, “While oil was spilling around the river, we were catching fish there and immediately we came back home after we saw oil in the river on the day.” “We are passing through a critical moment with our families,” said the fisherman. Arbindu Roy, 42 of Katakhali area said that although some of the people in the area are passing their days, the majority people in the locality were in jobless since the incident was occurred. The forest department, however, confirmed that within a few days, this situation would expectedly be changed. As an oil tanker sank at a river in Sundarbans, the country’s environmental experts have expressed fear that the coastal ecosystems are being fallen in danger. Earlier on Tuesday morning, with a huge quantity of oil, the tanker sank at a river in the Sundarbans after being hit by a cargo vessel in Mongla upazila of Bagerhat. The oil of the tanker has already spread in the adjacent areas of Sundarbans.
