18 Aug, 2013
The Dhaka University on Saturday conferred the citation and other gifts, scheduled to be presented to the country’s founding president Sheikh Mujibur Rahman at convocation on August 15, 1975, to the prime minister, Sheikh Hasina.
The vice-chancellor, AAMS Arefin Siddique, handed over the citation and gift items to the prime minister at a function at Bangabandhu Memorial Museum at Dhanmondi.
Pro-vice-chancellors Nasreen Ahmad and Shahid Akhtar Hossain, treasurer Md Kamal Uddin, among other senate and syndicate members and teachers, also attended the programme.
The citation and gift items were prepared to welcome the country’s founding president Sheikh Mujib on August 15, 1975, when he, along with all but two of his family members, was assassinated.
On behalf of the university, the then vice-chancellor Abdul Matin Chowdhury prepared the citation for the convocation where Sheikh Mujib for the first time was scheduled to join as the chancellor of the university.
The citation went missing after his assassination. Later, a retired deputy registrar, Amir Hossain, found the wooden framed citation in a pile of files inside an cupboard in a room of the administrative building on December 2, 2009. The crests and casket were found at the registrar’s office.
