BCL, Shibir clash in RU; 20 Injured

A violent clash between pro-government Bangladesh Chhatra League and Jamaat-e-Islami's student front Islami Chhatra Shibir on Tuesday left at least two students bullet-hit and several others injured.
Six members of the Proctorial Board were also reportedly "harassed" while trying to calm down the situation.
According to students' accounts, the police remained inactive during the clashes.
They said tension had been simmering on the campus since Shibir men were detained in a case filed over torching of a university bus last month. It got further heightened as the two groups had a showdown on the campus on Monday.
They said around 11am, Shibir activists gathered on the southern premises of the university library and BCL men positioned themselves in front of the arts building.
Later, the BCL activists chased the Shibir men. Several rounds of bullets were also fired during the chase and counter-chase. Members of both student fronts were seen carrying arms.
Additional Commissioner of Rajshahi Police S M Moniruzzaman told bdnews24.com that several students had been injured in the clashes. Two of the injured, Jahangir Hossain, a student of the Department of Folklore, and Arif Hossain, of the Department of Management, have been sent to hospital with bullet wounds.
The law enforcers fired several rounds of blank shots in a bid to control the situation, he added.
Shibir men left the campus following the clash and took position in front of three entrances of the university.
Around noon, the pro-government student wing members demonstrated in front of the Vice Chancellor's residence and tried to smash the main gate.
University's Assistant Proctor Zulfikar Ali told bdnews24.com that the Chhatra League activists had harassed six members of the Proctorial Board when they tried to intervene.
When asked about the incident, General Secretary of the BCL's Rajshahi University unit Abu Hossain Dipu told bdnews24.com, "The administration has failed to provide protection to the campus."
According to students' accounts, members of the ruling party's student wing brought out a procession from in front of the VC's residence and took position in front of the administrative building around noon.
"We trying to calm down the situation," university's Student Advisor Golam Sarowar Tapu said.
