Meritorious students, social workers honoured

Speakers at a function in the city yesterday underscored the need for nursuring latent talents of the students to help them grow up as worthy citizen of the soil.
They also urged teachers and guardians to encourage students to have practical experience of the day-to-day life to relate their education to real life situations.
The function was organised by the Bangladesh Medha Bikas Society to award medals and certificates to some meritorious students who secured golden GPA in the last SSC examination and honour a number of successful social, political and cultural workers at the Photo Journalist Association Auditorium.
Mostafa Kamal Majumder, editor of The New Nation was the chief guest at the function, which was presided over by SM Anowar Hossain Apu, chairman of the society. The function was also addressed by Lion Mrs Helen Kabir, chairman of Pratikkha Foundation, Salauddin Babu, president of Joy Bangla Sanghoti Gosti, ASM Mosharraf Hossain Milon, secretary general of Bangladesh City and Municipality Employees Federation, Nazma Farzana and Shahidul Islam among others.
The speakers said that many meritorious students cannot be successful in this life because they are not oriented to real life situation during their courses of study. All parents, guardians and students should be aware of this shortcoming of the present education system, they added.
