Rangamati situation eases after Sec 144

The clash between indigenous people and Bangali settlers quelled after Rangamati district administration imposed Section 144 in entire town on Saturday.
“Until further instruction, the imposition stays effective,” Mostafa Kamal, deputy commissioner of Rangamati, told The Daily Star.
Section 144 was imposed around 11:00am, the DC added.
The DC said that Rangamati district administration has called for an urgent meeting at Rangamati Circuit House at 4:00pm to discuss ways into resolving the issue, reports our Rangamati correspondent.
State Minister for CHT Affairs Dipankar Talukder, General Officer Commanding (GOC) of Chittagong and leaders from different political parties are expected to be present at the meeting.
At least 10 people were injured as the clash erupted around 10:20am from Rangamati Government College in the morning centering an altercation between a Bengali and an indigenous student.
“The two students had an altercation over a trivial issue; there was nothing ‘communal’ in that. But later two groups of students engaged in the clash and it spread all over the town,” said Masud-ul-Hassan, superintendent of police (SP) of Rangamati.
Border Guard Bangladesh, huge contingent of police and army personnel were deployed in the town to avert further untoward incident, the SP added.
The clash developed around 11:00am from the College Gate area of the town and spread in Bonorupa, Kathaltoli and Rajbari areas.
Vehicular movements on Rangamati-Chittagong highway remains suspended since the clash started.
