‘DUCSU election is a must’
05 Mar, 2017
President Abdul Hamid underscored the need for holding the Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU) polls immediately to develop leadership for democracy.
He said, “DUCSU election is a must to flourish regular student leadership and for developing new leadership to strengthen the foundation of the democracy. Otherwise, the future leadership of the country would face vacuum.”
President, also the chancellor of the university, said these while addressing the 50th convocation of Dhaka University (DU) held at its central playground on Saturday (March 4) noon.
Abdul Hamid said the capable and honest leadership is needed to ensure sustainable development in the country. This leadership will be created through the student politics. “I also began my career in politics through student politics. But there is difference between the-then student politics and the current student politics,” he added.
He said the student politics has to be controlled by the regular students. If capable and honest student leadership is not created through the student leadership, the future leadership would be at stake.
The President mentioned the outstanding contribution of country's student politics in various successful movements, particularly the student politics of 60’s. But he expressed dissatisfaction over the present scenario of the student politics. “The student politics is gradually losing its confidence, support and respect of common people and the general students as well,” he said.
Recalling his career in the student politics, Abdul Hamid said, “We had targeted the meritorious students to include in the student politics. We had worked for the general students to get their votes. So, they had loved us. But what is being happened in the current time? If the student leaders’ ages are 40/50, how they will adjust them with the students of 21?”
