01 Aug, 2016
Police have found weapons, including a firearm, after raiding residential halls of Comilla University following a death in clash between factions of the Awami League’s student front.
Marketing Department student Saiful Khalid succumbed to his gunshot wounds early on Monday at the Comilla Medical College Hospital.
Police said that shots were fired Sunday midnight on the campus when a clash erupted between two groups of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL).
At least 11 people, some with bullet wounds, were taken to hospitals after the clash.
On Monday morning, the authorities shut down the university indefinitely and instructed students to leave the campus.
Police later raided the three residential halls for male students.
No one was allowed to leave the halls without displaying before police the ID cards issued by the university.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Shah Abid Hossain said that a pistol, around 100 sharp weapons and iron rods were recovered from the halls.
Three persons, who failed to provide proofs of identity, have been held during the raid, he added.
