Monday’s unruly campaign for enforcing a countrywide 48-hour hartal by embattled Jamaat-Shibir activists, after a cessation for the holy Eid, could mark the beginning of a train of violent political protests leading to the election time.
Their immediate target is to prevent party deregistration and halt the war crimes trial and free their top leaders held in jail and being tried one after another, some of them being sentenced to death.
They also have the demand in common with the main opposition party, BNP, for restoration of the scrapped caretaker government system for holding the upcoming general election. And BNP now plans to gear up their prolonged agitation into a one-point movement for polls under a non-party government.
Just ahead of their two-day countrywide non-stop hartal, the pickets unleashed violence across the country, including the capital, by exploding crude bombs and clashing with law-enforcers.
Jamaat-Shibir men brought out sudden processions at Mirpur and Moghbazar and blasted cocktails in different other areas of the capital, creating panic among the city-dwellers.
According reports reaching daily sun newsroom, the activists also exploded crude bombs in Sirajganj and Chittagong districts on the eve of their strike, seen as the starter of the post-eid opposition movement.
A police constable was injured in Sirajganj when Jamaat-Shibir men exploded cocktails targeting the law-enforcers.
Jamaat-e-Islami called a countrywide 48-hour hartal for Tuesday and Wednesday in protest against the High Court verdict that declared illegal the registration of the Islamic party.
Police and witnesses said Jamaat-Shibir men brought out a sudden procession near Mirpur-10 crossing in the city about 3:00pm in support of the hartal.
As police reached there, chase and counter-chase took place between law-enforcers and Jamaat-Shibir men. At least five crude bombs were also exploded by Jamaat-Shibir activists.
Police also fired four to five rounds of blank shots and 10-12 teargas shells to disperse them. Soon after the incident, Mirpur police led by Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abdul Latif raided Benaroshi Palli at Mirpur and arrested five people.
Police fired several rounds of rubber bullets when several hundred local people chased their van and tried to snatch the arrested persons, the OC said.
Additional police and RAB personnel were deployed in and around the troubled area to avert further any untoward incident.
Hartal supporters also brought out a procession in capital’s Moghbazar area. They also exploded two cocktails at that time and set fire a tyre on the road after pouring petrol on it.
In Sirajganj, Jamaat-Shibir activists brought out a procession in the district town. They hurled a cocktail aiming at police in front of Mostofa Plaza, leaving a constable injured. Police arrested two Jamaat activists from the spot.
In Chittagong, some 30 Jamaat-Shibir activists brought out a procession in Padua Bazar under Lohagora upazila of the district around 10:00am. They exploded five cocktails from the procession and hurled brick chips at vehicles on Chittagong-Cox’s Bazar Highway.
According to intelligence sources, Jamaat-Shibir men who went into hiding in the face of massive crackdown by law-enforcers have started coming out their hideouts and reorganising themselves to create unrest across the country including the capital.
As part of their strategy, Jamaat-Shibir men have selected post-Eid days for unleashing violence across the country. They could not launch action programme during the holy month of Ramadan due to strong criticism.
“As the month of Ramadan and Eid ended, they (Jamaat-Shibir men) may now carry out subversive activities across the country over several issues including HC verdict declaring illegal the registration of the party and death-penalty for some of its front-ranking leaders,” an intelligence source said.
Two weeks back, Jamaat-Shibir activists went on the rampage, vandalized and torched many vehicles and blocked many roads and highways in the capital and other parts of the country.
They also blasted a number of cocktails at different parts of the capital including Jatrabari and Mohakhali areas, creating panic among the city-dwellers.
Jamaat-Shibir men also hurled cocktails targeting police in Bogra. Besides, they blocked many roads and highways in different parts of the country including Rajshahi, Pabna, Shirajganj, Jessore, Bogra, Narayangonj, Chittagong and Chandpur.
Jamaat-e-Islami also threatened to paralyze the country through tougher action programme including countrywide non-stop hartal (general strike)
Massive security measures were taken with deployment of a large number of law-enforcers comprising police, RAB and armed police battalion in different areas of the capital.
Just ahead of the hartal,
A huge number of police and RAB have already been deployed at different strategic points in the capital on Monday. Police and RAB personnel were seen patrolling in city areas. They were also seen searching vehicles, including motorbikes, CNG auto-rickshaws and taxcabs at different parts of the capital.
Deputy Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (media) Masudur Rahman said security has been beefed up at different parts of the capital since Monday afternoon.
Besides, law enforcers—both police and RAB personnel and intelligence branches are keeping close watch at all entry and exist points in the capital including inter-district bus terminals—Gabtali, Mohakhali and Sayedabad, Kamalapur Railway Station and Sadarghat Launch Terminal.
“Alongside other law-enforcing agencies, RAB also intensified its security measures in the capital and other parts of the country,” the RAB director (media) said.
Since the first week of November last year, leaders and activists of Jamaat and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir have been carrying out destructive activities, to press for release of their central leaders Ghulam Azam, Motiur Rahman Nizami, Ali Ahsan Mujaheed, Delwar Hossain Sayeedi, Abdul Kader Mollah and Kamaruzzaman who are now facing trial on charge of committing crimes against humanity during the country’s liberation war in 1971.
