Need a shake-up in the cabinet : Sheikh Hasin
11 Dec, 2017
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has hinted for changes in the cabinet. While conducting some of her official chores at her office along with some senior level officials, she comes up with her plan to bring about the changes in the cabinet.
She uses a wonderful example while expressing her views. She says, “When we keep our home furniture in the same position for years, they give us a tedious impression. We must make some changes in our house once in a while by altering the positions of the furniture. She also said, “We must accelerate the work speed in this last phase before the election”. Many close sources of the Prime Minister have confirmed the news.
The Chief Coordinator for Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) to the Prime Minister`s Office (PMO) Abul Kalam Azad was present there when the conversation took place.
The exact time when the cabinet will be reorganized has not been confirmed by the PM. However, many assume, it will happen soon.
The current cabinet was formed on January 5, 2014 after the National Election. Since then the cabinet has undergone several changes. However, the most discussed change was the Sayed Ashraful Islam as he was relieved of his duty as the LGRD minister and was then made a minister without portfolio. Later, he was entrusted with the ministerial role of Public Administration.
Another prominent example is the current Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal who was promoted as the minister from the position of state minister. And the reshuffle continued.
Several officials from the PMO think that the next cabinet will be shuffled prioritizing the general election. Before the 2013 general election, the cabinet has undergone a big change.
At that time, the PM invited Tofail Ahmed, Rashed Khan Menon and Hasanul Huq Inu in the cabinet. Only Hasanul Huq Inu accepted the invitation and joined the cabinet. While the other two refused to take the oath as they believed they were not invited properly in the swearing ceremony. It happened when the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) was protesting for the caretaker government. The sudden decision of the two leaders gave an impetus to BNP`s movement. However, after the election, both of them joined the ministry and still, they are in the cabinet.
The PM again wants some changes in her cabinet. Some close to the people may receive a promotion. Those who failed to perform in the ministries as expected will be given relatively less important ministries. And some young party leaders who have proved to be skilled and served due role with devotion and honesty can be rewarded with the full ministerial role.
Earlier the PM has expressed her satisfaction with the works of the State Ministers of Power and Energy, Information Technology and Ministry of Textiles and Jute. Some days back, the PM reiterated it that more young leaders will be incorporated in the cabinet.
However, sources of the PMO say that if the cabinet is reshuffled, it will be in the reckoning of the next parliamentary election. It is also believed that the Prime Minister will not give a big blow to any member of the cabinet.
