Govt widens path of plunder: BNP
24 Oct, 2012
Opposition BNP says that the government decision to amend the company law has created a panic-like situation in the country’s business sector and that it is meant for widening the path of plunder for the ruling-party people.
“Country’s businessmen are now scared of such an amendment and losing their interest in doing business. If the government introduces the provision, they will not invest more,” party’s standing committee member Nazrul Islam Khan told a commemorative meeting in the capital.
Terming the amendment “unconstitutional”, another standing committee member, Barrister Moudud Ahmed MP, apprehended that businesses will be affected when Awami League men will take control.
They came up with the observations a day after the cabinet approved in principle amendment to the company law aiming to protect interests of the members of the multilevel marketing companies, including Destiny.
Alleging widespread corruption in the country, Nazrul said, “Bangladesh became world champions in corruption during the regime of Awami League-led government, tarnishing image abroad.
“It’s a great shame for the country as the chief of prosecution of the International Crime Tribunal visited Bangladesh to investigate the allegations of corruption in Padma Bridge project.”
Criticising the Anti-Corruption Commission, Nazrul Islam said though the ACC claimed itself as an independent body, it was busy giving clean chit to the ruling-party men.
The ruling Awami League was withdrawing cases against its leaders, including the prime minister, while new cases were being filed against the opposition men, alleged Rafiqul Islam Miah, another member of the party’s policymaking standing committee.
“The case against BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia can’t run long because the case filed against Sheikh Hasina on the same ground was withdrawn,” he told a human chain at the National Press Club in the capital.
The former minister reiterated that tough movement would be launched soon to dragoon the government into restoring the caretaker-government system to oversee the next national election.
