50 hurt in clash over Madhupur Mayor’s arrest

At least 50 people were injured in a clash at Madhupur upazila in the district Thursday centering arrest of local Municipal mayor, also upazila BNP General Secretary Shahidul Islam Sarker.
Source also said Madhupur Municipal Ward No-6 councilor Amzad Hossain filed a case against Shahidul alleging that he along with his followers vandalized BNP nomination aspirant Engineer Abdul Latif's billboard and opened fire to create panic on Wednesday night.
Meanwhile, police arrested the mayor on the night and released him on Thursday morning after interrogation.
Later, police again detained him from his resident. After the incident, his supporters blockaded police station and staged protest on Jamalpur-Mymensingh highway demanding his release.
At one stage, agitated supporters torched a police van and a motorbike.
Following the matter, Tangail Deputy Police Super (Gopalpur circle) Abul Hasnat told banglanews: "Additional police forces were deployed in the area and now the situation is under control."
