Billboards being removed from many areas in city
13 Aug, 2013
The ruling Awami League (AL) has started removing billboards from the city following stiff criticism from different quarters.
Earlier, the AL had set up at least 1000 billboards in the capital city and its surrounding areas, highlighting achievements of the AL-led incumbent government.
These billboards were placed at all important and strategic locations in the capital city like Manik Mia Avenue, Farmgate, Karwanbazar, Shahbagh,
Motshobhaban, Paltan, Gulistan along with other key places.
While visiting different city areas, this correspondent found many billboards removed.
Sources said, the ruling party men removed the billboards from midnight to small hours of the Monday night.
The authorities of Dhaka City Corporations, North and South, remained mum about the development.
When asked, Md Ansar Ali Khan, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) said, "We do not know who were responsible for the installation and removal of the billboards."
A senior official of DCC North preferring anonymity told The New Nation that advertising agencies have leased out their billboards as per square feet for advertisement and product promotions in their billboards. "So, it is not our responsibility to check what materials have been placed there for display. We only ensure the structural security of the billboards," he added.
