Global Tiger Day celebrated
30 Jul, 2013
WildTeam celebrated the Global Tiger Day along with all the other tiger range countries on Monday.
The official theme of the day in Bangladesh was 'Save Tiger,' protect mother-like Sundarbans', said a press release.
With the spirit of celebrating the majesty of tigers and their beautiful home, the Sundarbans-the day was observed with enthusiasm in Dhaka and the four ranges of the Sundarbans.
WildTeam has been working to conserve the Sundarbans Tigers since 2004. Even a hundred years ago, tigers roamed all over the country, but now the Sundarbans remains its last stronghold.
Of the 3200 wild tigers remaining worldwide, Sundarbans provides home to 300-500 tigers, which is the largest single tiger population in the world. Bangladesh therefore has a wonderful opportunity to contribute in the protection of this globally endangered species.
WildTeam believes that successful conservation needs the active involvement of people. In February 2012, the Sundarban Mayer Moton (Mother-like Sundarbans) campaign was launched to strengthen the relationship between people and the Sundarbans.
This campaign highlights the mother-like role of the Sundarbans as protector, provider and nurturer to the people in the forest periphery. This year's Tiger Day celebration also echoes that spirit and emphasizes the need to protect the Sundarbans.
In Dhaka, WildTeam participated in a vibrant rally organized by the Ministry of Environment and Forests which started from Doyel Chattar - full of enthusiastic participation from conservation workers and tiger lovers alike.
Afterwards a discussion session was arranged in the Osmani Memorial Auditorium.
