18 Aug, 2015
The president of Chhatra League’s Hazaribagh thana unit who was accused of beating a boy to death has been killed in what RAB said was a gunfight.
“Arju Miah, 28, son of Lal Miah, was killed in the shootout early on Tuesday morning,” said Aminul Islam, sub-inspector of Hazaribagh Police Station.
The deceased, who lived in Hazaribagh’s Ganakatuli area, was suspected of beating his neighbour’s son Raja, 17, to death on charges of theft.
Police earlier detained three men – Monir, Sagor and Sujon – in connection with Raja’s death.
Sub-inspector of Hazaribagh Police Station Walid Mahmud said on Monday night the detainees have close connections with Arju.
Raja’s paternal aunt Ratna Begum said Arju on Monday morning forced Raja into his house after a mobile phone was stolen from the house.
“Arju severely beat Raja up, causing the boy to pass out. Raja was returned to us in the afternoon and we took him to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where doctors pronounced him dead,” she added.
