Sakib ends low-key county campaign
30 Jul, 2013
Bangladesh all-rounder Sakib al Hasan ended a low-key campaign for Leicestershire in the Friends Life Twenty20 tournament as he finished with 146 runs and nine wickets and is now set for his mission Caribbean in Barbados.
Sakib, who previously featured for Worcestershire in the same competition two years ago, put in a modest performance for Leicestershire by his own high standards.
He played 10 matches for his 146 runs at 18.25, including a highest score of 43 not out from 21 deliveries against Nottinghamshire. With the leather, Sakib scalped nine wickets conceding 243 runs at an average of 27, with best figures of two wickets for seven runs.
Even though Sakib had a similar campaign with the bat for Worcestershire in 2011 when he posted 110 runs in 12 matches, he performed admirably with the ball.
The ace all-rounder was the joint highest wicket-taker for Worcestershire with 19 wickets, alongside Gareth Andrew.
Sakib’s mentor Mohammad Salahuddin, former fielding coach of the Bangladesh national cricket team, was of the opinion that Sakib was a bit aggressive with the bat.
‘I think he [Sakib] was a tad too aggressive with the bat. The bowling at the beginning of his campaign did not seem that good. But he drilled hard alone with his bowling and later on it improved,’ he said.
Salahuddin went on to say that he was expecting a much better display from the all-rounder in the forthcoming Caribbean Premier League Twenty20, which gets underway today.
‘The conditions in the West Indies are much more similar to ours. Hopefully, he will fare better there,’ he added.
Sakib will represent Barbados while his national team-mate, opener Tamim Iqbal, will feature for St Lucia. They will face each other in the inaugural game of the competition today.
