SC nod for 3 Indian TV channels
22 Feb, 2017
Indian TV channelsThe Supreme Court on Wednesday overruled a writ petition filed seeking halt of the High Court order that allowed airing three Indian TV channels in Bangladesh.
According to the SC verdict, the Indian channels -- Star Jalsha, Star Plus and Zee Bangla -- can be aired in the country.
Chamber justice Syed Mahmud Hossain handed down the order and suggested the petitioners to leave-to-appeal.
"The court has asked petitioners to file leave-to-appeal. We will file the appeal after receiving copy of the verdict," said Eklas Uddin Bhuiyan, a lawyer of the petitioners.
On 7 August 2014, Supreme Court lawyer Syeda Shahin Ara Laily filed the writ in the form of public interest litigation seeking to stop operation of the three Indian TV channels being aired in Bangladesh, arguing that those have been making an adverse impact on the social life of the country's people.
Later on 29 January, the High Court dismissed the writ petition and ordered airing of the three Indian TV channels in Bangladesh to continue.
