HC questions Jesmin's bail
02 Sep, 2013
The High Court has issued a ruling asking why the bail granted to Hall-Mark Group Chairman Jesmin Islam in 11 corruption cases should not scrapped. The bench of Justices Nizamul Haque and Kashifa Hossain passed the order after hearing a plea by Anti-Corruption Commission on Sunday.
The Deputy Commissioner of Dhaka Sheikh Yusuf Harun and Jesmin have been asked to reply within 14 days.
Lawyer Mohammad Kurshid Alam Khan represented the ACC while Advocate Shah Manjurul Haque argued for Jesmin at the hearing.
The national anti-graft agency had moved High Court on Aug 13 challenging a lower court bail order for Jesmin. On Aug 4, the court of Senior Special Judge Zahurul Haq granted bail to the scam-hit group's Chairman on condition she repaid Tk 1 billion per month to the state-run Sonali Bank.
Jesmin, her husband Tanvir Mahmud, the group's Managing Director, and her brother-in-law General Manager Tusher Ahmed are currently behind bars for allegedly swindling Sonali Bank's Ruposhi Bangla Hotel Branch of Tk 25 billion.
