A local Awami League (AL) activist was chopped to death by miscreants at Gopalpur village in Mirpur upazila early Monday. The deceased was identified as Mamun Gazi, 35, an activist of Chithlia union unit of the ruling party and son of late Amjad Gazi of the village.
Shahidul Islam Shahin, officer-in-charge of Mirpur Police Station, said a gang of miscreants, numbering 3/4, swooped on Mamun and chopped him with sharp weapons indiscriminately at about 2:00 am when he was sleeping in his house leaving him dead on the spot.
Informed, police recovered the body and sent it to Kushtia General Hospital morgue for an autopsy.
Mamun might have been killed over previous enmity, the OC added.
Police arrested Jihad Ali, a union parishad member, for his suspected involvement in the killing.
