Terrorist ringleader killed in Noakhali ‘gunfight’

A terrorist ringleader was killed in a ‘gunfight’ with police at Jogikhali Pool in Begumganj upazila early Saturday.
The deceased was identified as Abul Bashar, 45, leader of ‘Bashar Bahini’ and a former member of Alaiyapur union parishad and son of Golam Mostafa of Abhirampur in the upazila. Being tipped off, a team of Begumganj thana police conducted a drive in Sitakunda upazila of Chittagong and arrested Bashar on Thursday.
He was wanted in several cases, including for murder and extortion, said police.
Later he was taken to Noakhali on Thursday night.
After interrogation, police along with Bashar conducted a drive in Jogikhali Pool area for recovering firearms around 2.00 am on Saturday.
Sensing presence of the law enforcers, associates of Bashar opened fire at police, prompting the law enforcers to fire back, triggering a gunfight.
Bashar was caught in the line of fire and injured.
He was rushed to Noakhali Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead around 2:45 am.
