Clouds of chaos getting closer
23 Aug, 2013
Nobel Laureate Dr Muhammad Yunus on Thursday emphasized the need for caretaker government system, saying that the next general election must be held under a non-party neutral government to make it credible, acceptable and peaceful.
Dr. Yunus said this while addressing a joint press conference with president of Krishak-Sramik Janata League Bangabir Quader Siddiqui at Yunus Centre in the city, following a view-exchange meeting with him.
Kader Siddiqui echoing Yunus said the next election cannot be held without non-party neutral government. "No body will accept the election without a caretaker government." He said prime minister Sheikh Hasina has surpassed Hitler.
The country, Kader Siddique said cannot be safe in the hands of those under
whom Grameen Bank is not safe. "We need to protect the country from the hands of such people."
Dr. Yunus said the black cloud of chaos is getting closer in Bangladesh, and if it happens for a section of people or some parties', the people of the country will not forgive them.
In an oblique reference to Prime minister Sheikh Hasina and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, Dr. Yunus said, "There is not enough time. Therefore, come to a consensus. I have no intention to come to politics.
Dr. Yunus underlined the need for participation of all political parties in the election and urged the political leaders to reach a compromise. "We appeal to our political leaders to reach a compromise. Resolve problems through talks. "Peace should prevail in the country," he said. When asked if he would initiate measures to evolve a consensus among the parties on the issue, Dr. Yunus said, "I have no means to bring them to an understanding."
He said the people of the country would not forgive him or her who would be responsible for unwanted situation in the country.
Earlier, on Wednesday questioning the incumbent government's feeling for the people, Prof. Yunus asked, "Can we once again hand over power to someone who wants to see an institution like Grameen Bank destroyed?
He said this at a meeting with a team of Bhashani Anushari Parishad, led by Language Movement veteran Abdul Matin at Yunus Centre.
"But no matter how much they try they won't be able to destroy Grameen Bank. The people of the country would not allow them to put even a scratch on their beloved institution. People around the world will stand by its side."
"Great leaders like Bhashani have inspired me to work for the poor. I was able to establish an institution like Grameen Bank with the help of poor women, which then went on to win the Nobel Prize. No other organization like Grameen Bank was ever awarded this honour," he said. Grameen Bank was established for no other purpose than to help poor people of the country, he said adding "Those who wish to see this bank destroyed has no compassion for the poor."
The Nobel Laureate said the country has turned into a den of iniquity. "Nothing gets done without bribe. Attempts are being made to erase the name of great patriots like Bhashani from the country's history. But time will change, it has to change."
The leaders of Bhashani Anushar Parishad pledged to stand by Grameen Bank at all costs. They said Prof. Yunus has the support of the people.
