Research Seminar on Residential Childcare in Bangladesh

There will be a seminar in mid December 2013 in Dhaka aimed at disseminating the results of a recently completed Doctoral study from the University of Edinburgh, UK, highlighting the key findings of study into residential childcare practices and the experiences of children and young people in Bangladesh. The researcher spent a number of years investigating the functioning of a variety of Residential Childcare Systems (government, NGO and faith-based orphanage, i.e. madrasah) operating in Bangladesh. This research is one of the first of such scientific pieces of work carried out in Bangladesh, and more specifically in South Asia.

The aim of this seminar will be to provide a coherent picture of residential childcare systems, policies and practices operating in Bangladesh at this current time, and to provide a clearer understanding of the state of play for those young people who have gone through such ‘care’ systems. It will highlight young people’s in-care, leaving care and after care experiences, and the impact ‘care’ has had on the lives and well-being of those now out of the care system.
