Hills at head. The waves of Bay of Bengal are playing at the feet. Chittagong, one of the divisions of Bangladesh, bears a great history of our national life. It is situated on the bank of the Karnaphuli and the Bay of Bengal with natural beauty. In 1971, President Ziaur Maharani declared the great liberation of Bangladesh from Chittagong. But it is a great misfortune that Ziaur Rahman, architect of self-reliant Bangladesh, founder of multiparty-democracy and Bangladeshi nationalism, was killed by the enemies of the country from the same place, the circuit house of Chittagong, on May 30, 1981. At present, the place of his assassination is called Zia Memorial Museum.
This was built with beautiful architecture covering 3.11 acres in 1993. On June 3, 1981, it was granted on the basis of the decision of Ministry Cabinet as Zia Memorial Meuseum. Then in 1993 PM Khaleda Zia inaugurated this museum.
In the museum, the political ideology and life of Ziaur Rahman was emphasized to show the circle of his life.
The director of national museum says that – according to the decision of NIKAR, Zia Memorial Museum was included in the development programme in 1992. According to the decision of NIKAR on 6 September 1992, spending 299.43 lakh taka, the alliance project was sent to planning commission. Then, the finance ministry allotted about 289.37 lakh taka from the total budget to change the Circuit House as Zia Memorial Museum. For this, three organizations together worked to do so.
The architect commission created necessary designs for this. Mass Commission completed its preservance and the national Museum designed the Zia Memorial Museum with 12 galleries. They built a library and conference room also. Among all kinds of works, Mass Commission spent 135.22 lakh taka for repairing its electricity system.
On 1 August 1993, the museum workers started its inaugural work. About 743 documents of the life of Ziaur Rahman were collected, including 336 materials and 13 others. It was built with a short time. So there was a suspicion that there might be architectural problem. As a result, some recommendations are decided for its perfect and intake planning. They are:
1. Development and presentation for exhibition of the museum
2. Collecting new documents
3. Setting up a research center and information center and
4. Continuing the collecting process.
The inaugural project included research center, modern meeting room, proper lighting, sound control, air conditioned system including 12 galleries.
Besides, the design of 12 galleries was below:
East wing: gallery 1 and 2. The relics of liberation were kept in the galleries. Ziaur Rahman’s declaration of the liberation of Bangladesh has been imaged on the two galleries. Declaration of liberation, protrait of the chief general with sector commander have been shown here and others related with liberation war. Besides, there is also the historical transmeter of Kalurghat Betar Kendro as a portrait. There are many portraits – such as: microphone, easy chair, table, radio console, a painting of Zia, congregation of March 7, etc.
The East Wing: 3, 4, 6 is belonged to Ziaur Rahman. Zia’s personal and familiar portraits are kept here only.
The East Wing: 6 is belonged to Zia as a freedom fighter. There is a portrait of non-permanent government of Mujibnagar of April 17, 1971 with its members. There is also the portrait of the surrender of Pakistani soldiers and picture of internal liberation war. There is also the portrait of Zia when he was at Comilla and as a Colonel, Brigadier, Major General, Super Chief and Chief of the Army. But it is a great sorrowful matter that this museum is being unseen because of many reasons. There is a children park in front of the museum in the town. The narrow west road of this park is inclined with a wall. Anyone can enter into the museum by the road. There is no sign board in front of the road. There is no sign for where the museum is situated.
Humayun Malik, deputy keeper in charge, says that the tourists and spectators of Zia Memorial Museum are more than that of other museums. About 500 onlookers visit the museum daily. On occasion, there come 3 or 4 thousand people. It becomes hard to control the crowds when the time comes.
Monsanu Marma, works as a member of MLSS for 12 years who argues that some people cry when they visit to show their respect to Ziaur Rahman. Sometimes they become more emotional. Those who never see Ziaur Rahman, they also cry for Zia seeing the museum. Munirul Islam, 24 years old, works in a garments factory in Dhaka. He has come to see the Zia Memorial Museum in Chittagong. He becomes emotional seeing the present condition of this museum. Most of the people are unable to locate where the museum is. The park in front covered the museum. On the other side, owing to build another building, it is hard to understand that there is a holy institute.
Many people come from different places of Bangladesh to visit this museum. Here the entry fee is 2 taka only.
An unknown employee says, “There is no alternative way to come inside a fine begised. There is no way to put out fire if there creates.” The keeper in charge says, “There are some instruments for putting out fire but now way to bring from outside. It’s very risky.”
There has been seen that to make a new building in front of the administration building makes the museum rusty. An architect urges that it must damage its beauty. It will cover the whole place behind like that of the forward. So we should preserve the asset.
The keeper in charge said, “All these are part of the development work. But the park in front and the wall of the west spoiled the beauty of the museum as well as hid the structure bearing high historical importance.” He said, “Foreign visitors also become highly emotional coming here.”
The Zia Memorial is an inseparable part of our national history. An extraordinary visiting place. Everyone should preserve its purity, security and visibility at any cost.
