On 14th of April, I was saying my Indian colleague that today is our bengali new year. Instead of greeting me, she was little-bit surprised and asked me 'but you are muslim'. I replied what is the problem. Then she told me 'we celebrate Holy puja on pahela baisak' and she explained me what is holy puja. Then she mentioned that in India mainly there are two new year days based on area. South Indian celebrates new year on pahela baisak during the day of Holy puja. But Gujrati and others (my colleague is gujrati) follow pahela kartic as new year day. Listening all these I was then become dumb. We are Bangladeshi, we have culture, we have religion. Religion we can not change. But at the same time in the name of religion we can not use piece of soil instead of toilet paper for sanitation. Same way 'Lungi -what I liked much, is not a part of our religious dress. We need to understand and follow the main spirit of our religion. Other than religion - culture is man made. Definitely if there is anything wrong we must have to correct it. Pahela baisak if it is the day of religious day for hindu, then why 90% majority muslim country Bangladesh has to select that day as a new year day. Is this not a funny! We have to respect there religious belief. It is really rediculous that a big portion of our population knowingly or unknowingly try to establish some totally vague thing in Bangladesh. We have to get rid of all confusions, all misunderstanding - only then we'll become a smart nation.
