Bangladesh is passing a critical and politically restive time since February this year. Distrust and distance is increasing from the very beginning of Shahbag protest. The death sentence of opposition leader Delwar Hossain Sayedee added fuel to the fire. Shahbag has been able to bisect the journalist society; Bangladeshi media is clearly polarized now in two groups, pro-Shahbag (or Pro-Government) and anti-Government. No media has evidence to prove themselves unprejudiced. This is not actually the problem; the real problem is they are making false-fictitious news, hiding real number of death and injury and accusing a specific group as convict without any evidence. One of policies adopted by some media to befog public opinion is to change the result of the public poll. Bengali newspaper Daily Ittefaq, Daily Jugantor is accused by opposition activists of plotting false poll. Same thing was done by banglanews24.com and bdnws24.com. It is a matter of concern that International news agencies and Wikipedia rely much for information from Bangladesh on two English news agencies: The Daily Star and bdnews24.com. Some articles have been published in Bangladeshi Blogs about some fictitious and foggy report which were Published in the Daily Star.
Shame on you Daily Star
A series of fictitious journalism from English daily ‘The Daily Star’: When flippancy of a bloger ‘Fajil’(flippant) becomes news
Bdnews has taken its clear stand for Shahbag and the ruling Awami Government. Even its social affairs editor Baby Moudud is a MP (Member of Parliament) from ruling Awami league party. In 23 march, Bdnews itself organized a meeting to proceed the Shahbag movement further which was directed by its Chief Editor Toufique Imrose Khalidi
BDNews took its clear stand against Jamaat, Second largest opposition party in Bangladesh referring them to be the enemy of sovereignty of the state. Jamaat activists used to claim that along with some other media, BDNews is making fictitious reports on their activities which have no base.
To investigate the accusation, we found something very interesting last night. In their Bengali version, they made a report on a gathering arranged by anti-Jamaat Islamist group referring it as an ‘Extensive Gathering’. But not more than five hundred people did participate there. Jamaat activists’ claim, they made also a gathering at the very same place in January participated by thousands of its supporters, but the agency totally overlooked the matter.
Last night we came to notice their poll which was about Jamaat’s activity. The question of the poll was:
‘Bangladesh Qawmi Shikkharthi Parishad President Mortuja Al Hossain has said that the Jamaat-e-Islami is indulging in anti-Islam activities in the name of Islam and its leader Moududi misinterpreted the Quraan and insulted the prophets.Do you agree with him?’
In 25 March, 12:18 pm in local time, we saw the result which usually gives the idea to the reader before screen that Islamists and mass people think Jamaat as anti-Islamic force.
The result indicated that people voted for yes (against Jamaat) fifty seven percent and voted for no (favored Jamaat) forty three percent. But is it the real scenario? We took screen-shots three times before that. If anyone look sincerely at time and number of votes cast, it’ll be clear that it’s nothing but a farce.
Time- 8:42 total number of votes: 474
Time- 9:49 Total number of votes: 505
This can’t be a public poll. Media for Everyone Team strongly condemns BDNews24’s this unjust act and believes that the agency should regret about the matter and make a statement in the explanation of their deed.
