Chittagong University (CU) teacher Maidul Islam has been placed on a three-day remand in connection with a case filed under section 57 of ICT act for his alleged defamatory remarks against the prime minister in social media.

Senior Judicial Magistrate Sahidullah Kaisar of Judicial Magistrate's Court-1 in Chattogram passed the remand order after police produced Maidul before the court seeking five days remand, said the plaintiff’s lawyer Bhulan Lal Vowmik.

Earlier on September 24, Maidul, assistant professor of Sociology Department, was sent to jail after he surrendered before a court in Chattogram on completion of his eight weeks bail secured from High Court.

On July 24, former CU unit BCL leader Md Ifterkhat Uddin Ayaz lodged a case against Maidul under section 57 of ICT Act. Later, Maidul got bail from the HC on August 6.

According to the case statement, the complainant said Maidul has defamed PM Sheikh Hasina in a Facebook post, spelling her name as "Hashi Na" on July 13.

Maidul also defamed the PM by posting a superimposed picture where several students were seen sleeping in a small room, and a bowl of distasteful-looking lentil soup, the complainant said.

The case statement states Maidul gave a caption of the photo which reads “So which of the favours of your mother would you deny?”

Centring the alleged Facebook post, the BCL men of CU unit lodged a complaint against Maidul to the department chairperson and submitted a memorandum to the vice-chancellor against two teachers including Ali Ar Raji, a teacher of CU’s Communication and Journalism department and him.

The BCL men have also announced the teachers “unwelcome” on the campus.

Later, the university formed a three-member probe committee to investigate these allegations, against Maidul and Khandakar Ali Ar Raji.

However, Maidul told that he never wrote derogatory remarks against the premier.

He left the campus along with his family on July 15 after BCL men issued public threats to him and his family. He later notified the matter to university authorities and sought security from the university administra
