The government has decided to increase the minimum broadband speed to 5 MBps from existing 1 MBps. The broadband is a fast data communication medium. Ministry officials said the government wanted to ensure faster data connection at the user level and redefined the definition of broadband. Anything below 5MBps bandwidth will be considered as narrowband. Initially there was plan to increase the minimum broadband bandwidth to 2 MBps and gradually increase the bar, but finally the government set it at 5 MBps. According to Bangladesh Telecommunications Regulatory Commission’s latest data, the country’s active broadband internet users are 25.94 lakh as of January 2016. The country added 12.83 new broadband subscribers in 2015. BTRC in 2008 set the minimum speed for broadband at 128Kbps which the government later upgraded to 512 Mbps.
