LNG TERMINALS MEET GROWING POWER DEMAND

The government is planning to set up two more LNG terminals in Chittagong and Khulna to increase the import of liquefied natural gas for ensuring Bangladesh’s primary fuel safety. They recently took a new policy to allow import of liquefied natural gas by private companies. They will take five years to complete. A LNG terminal is being constructed at Moheshkhali in Cox’s Bazar. State-run Petrobangla has signed an agreement with a foreign company to set up the Moheshkhali LNG terminal that will have a capacity of 138,000 cubic feet of liquid natural gas. The government planned to produce 34,000MW from various energy sources by 2030. Oil and coal will account for 17,000MW each and gas for 8,500MW, while 6,800MW will come from nuclear, renewable and other sources. Officials hope to get 500 cubic feet of gas daily from this floating terminal once commissioned. Producing 34,000MW yearly will cost the government about $16 billion and it will be a big Challenge from them. The government to allow pvt companies to import LNG. A policy is taken to the private companies to import LNG. Until now, Petrobangla was eyeing to be the country’s lone LNG importer.
